Another one bites the dust

Lend an Ear

As Chris put it: "If today had a theme it would be 'nothing according to plan.'"

So it started with this bag of chicken, see? My grandparents were to join us for lunch after church and I had it all planned out so well. I would cook a bag of chicken leg quarters in the crock pot while we were at church and cook bagged noodles and whip up some mashed potatoes as soon as we got home from 1st service so that it would be ready when they got out of 2nd service. I pulled the bag out of the fridge and called for Chris. I smelled icky chicken through the thick plastic bag. Chris assured me that no ones nose can be that good, and it was most certainly just a case of another bag leaking chicken yuck onto our bag while it was being stored. Besides, it was still within date. I slit the bag open and he admitted that perhaps my nose was that good. Actually, I believe his words were "UGHHH!! Close IT! CLOSE it!!!!!" Poor, wonderful guy ran to the store before church to buy me more chicken. Fast forward. When we got home from church, Chris helped me prepare lunch (he's awesome, did I mention that?) by peeling potatoes, a job I hate. He decided to try a shortcut with the dicing. I was in full agreement that it sounded like a good plan. He ran them through the food processor's slicer so that they would be thin and hopefully cook quickly. #1 he unplugged the crockpot to do it and while he did plug it back in, for some reason it did not turn back on and the chicken did not finish cooking in time for lunch. #2 the chopper blade was still in the bottom of the processor and it turned the potato slices into mush as they came through. We tried to cook them anyway, but it did NOT work. We had noodles. Wonderful husband ran to the store again and we had hamburgers and noodles for lunch. An odd combination, but we ate and that's what matters. Naw, we ate with excellent company and that's what really matters. Fast forward some more. After a fun visit with my grandparents, we decided to try to catch the 2nd half of an auction half an hour away. It was an estate auction for a couple that had taught school for 30 years. Supposedly, they had a huge book collection being auctioned off. By the time we got there, they were hauling everything away. Missed it. But since we were in the neighborhood, we dropped in on some old friends and I don't remember the last time I was so glad things didn't go according to plan. If that auction had still been going, I'd have missed out on an incredible evening with some incredible friends.

And then we came home. As soon as I stepped in the door I could smell it: chicken. We left it on low to cook while we were at the auction, hoping it would be falling off the bone and easy to separate by the time we got home. We weren't planning on staying out so late and had completely forgotten about it. Yes, it was falling off the bone. But the bones were cooked soft! Nasty, mushy, disgusting job. But I did it. And at the very bottom of the pile o' chicken, I found a quarter of a hot dog, with a bite out of each end. ????? Chris dropped the bag in and the only time that lid was lifted afterwards was when I checked it for doneness at 12:00. We did NOT have hot dogs today. I don't even want to think about it.

Lots of giggling over here! Some days are like that, even in Australia. Still, you made the best of it, and that is what counts!

I forgot to add that I also left my huge bowl of noodles out on the counter for all those hours we were gone. About the only thing overcooked chicken tastes good in is creamy noodles. We laughed and laughed.

Ewww. I shouldn't have read that. Maybe if I drink a glass of water and breathe real slow, it'll pass...

Oh, I'm so sorry! You poor, pregnant thing, you! I will try to remember to put up disclaimers before the squeamish, morning-sickness-inducing stuff! lol.
