Guys Are Waffles, Girls Are Spaghetti

Guys are Waffles, Girls are Spaghetti

I grabbed this book to prepare for our youth group's upcoming lessons on Purity and, while it is intended for ages 12- 17, I gleaned plenty from the book myself even though I've been happily married for 14 years!

The book is hilarious yet very, very practical. It is written by a guy and I was surprised to find myself learning new things about the way my husband's brain works. Guys' brains are compared to waffles, with little compartments that they can hang out in. Girls' brains are compared to spaghetti with everything interconnected. When girls converse, our topics seem very relevant to us, but the guy we're speaking to might be leaping from compartment to compartment in his brain to keep up with us as we examine each "spaghetti strand" with our conversation.

Book Synopsis from the back of the book:
In this hilarious, yet amazingly insightful book, discover the secrets behind why guys and girls think and act so differently. Guys' brains have little compartments like a waffle, and there they keep most aspects of their lives separated. Girls brains are like spaghetti, because they tend to keep everything in their lives connected. Learn how to talk so a "waffle" will listen, and how to understand the "spaghetti-ish" conversations that you will encounter your entire life. Learning about waffles and spaghetti will make a difference in real-lilfe issues like dating, sex, friendships, body language, and communication skills of every kind. So dig in for the insights you've been craving.

Our church approaches Purity lessons by emphasizing respect for the opposite sex. Last year, we focused on chivalry and it was beautiful to watch them put it into practice. In order to truly respect the opposite sex, it helps to somewhat understand them. Though I doubt anyone could truly say they "Got It", this book does quite a bit of de-mystifying. For instance, apparently there truly is a compartment in my husband's brain that is empty. Totally empty. And when I ask him "Watcha thinkin?" and he answers "Nothing"....he really means it! I will never understand how that can be so, but it truly helped me see that it is real and that we can still see eye to eye. The book helps waffle-types and spaghetti-types communicate with each other in light of their different modes of thinking. This book does an incredible job of helping us understand how the other person's brain works and will be an excellent tool for teens (and their parents.)

That is funny. I can see how it would totally be true. We can flit from subject to subject and keep up with what's going on, while guys get lost if you change the subject in between and go back. It's all making sense now... LOL
